Klement's PA

Music is mysterious, not least of all its terminology. Col legno, scordatura, morendo and thousands of other terms. But it is not as acronymic as computing or politics and law. One acronym that does crop up is PA. PA should read PAS. It stands for Public Address System. A PA, simply put, is a large amplifier and set of loudspeakers, built to amplify music or song to an audience. A musician who needs her own PA is an active musician, one who is ready to perform at the drop of a hat, a composer who needs no technicians or external PA companies.

The first thing you notice when you enter Katharina Klement’s place is her big, personal and private PA. Then you see her boxes of her own CDs, of which she has already produced a dozen. This is an active musician. This is a musician who has gone out into the world and performed and been dedicated to her sound worlds. When she bends over into the piano to do her prepared piano things, you can hear that she has worked and worked, to get these sounds.

Again, like the best electronic musicians, she does not have a huge array of electronic instruments. She works with limited means and those are means she possesses both spiritually and physically. KK is also a sculptress, and in her composition she often talks about how sculpture is composition and composition is sculpture.

She served us tea in nice cups, on a low table, quite ready to talk about her music and the problems and joys of life as a composer. The world is not always kind to the gifted, as if it would deny them the gifts. But enriched by our music, our sculpture, we can go out in the world, filling it with sound, some of it from the PA and some of it from our hearts.

Klements PA
